Looking for a new camcorder? Your options are more diverse and specialized that ever before. Whether you are looking for a reliable camcorder to film home movies, a quality camcorder that can handle film projects, or a simple device that offers great value, there is something for every buyer.

What Is A Camcorder?

A camcorder records images just like a digital camera does. Light is focused on a photosensitive material within the camcorder to produce a video. Instead of using film to record video information, modern camcorders use light imaging sensors that transfer light into electrical signals. The camcorder converts these signals into data that can be stored on a flash memory chip or removable memory card. Camcorders can capture video and audio information at the same time.

Resolution

  • 720×480: The standard resolution for a camcorder without high definition capabilities.
  • 1280×720 pixels: A resolution available for high definition camcorders.
  • 1920×1080 pixels: The most common resolution found in high definition camcorders. Provides more video detail than a 1280×720 resolution camcorder.
  • 3840×2160 pixels: The highest possible video resolution. Available exclusively in 4K camcorders.

Features

Many shoppers will ultimately make their buying decision based on the features that a camcorder offers. While browsing the various options available to you, see if any camcorders come pre-equipped with any of the following features.

  • Image Stabilizers: If your camcorder is equipped with an image stabilizer, the camcorder will automatically reduce any shaking or jarring that occurs while you are filming.
  • Flip-Out LCD: LCD viewers are like miniature television screens. These screens can be stored on the camcorder or opened for video playback. LCD viewers allow you to review the footage you’ve taken so far. LCD viewers differ in size and resolution.
  • Autofocus: This feature will automatically adjust to increase the sharpness of a video. Some camcorders will come standard with autofocus, while others allow you to choose whether you want to rely on autofocus or manual focus as you film.
  • Full-Auto Switch: This feature enables the camcorder to automatically make adjustments to increase video quality.
  • Optical Zoom: This option will allow you to zoom in based on the camcorder’s maximum capacity. Some camcorders will allow you to zoom in up to 50 times for up-close-and-personal filming.
  • Digital Zoom: A camcorder equipped with digital zoom will be able to zoom in 400 times or more.

Specialized Add-Ons

Those who are more advanced with their videography may need more advanced features than the standard camcorder offers. These additions provide specialized options for those who are looking to take their videos to the next level.

  • 3D Filming: Some camcorders are able to capture two different images that represent the left and right eye separately. 3D glasses will allow an audience to view the 3D footage you capture.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: Some camcorders come equipped with automatic Wi-Fi connectivity, which allows the videographer to transfer video to a computer, hard drive, smartphone, tablet, or social network instantly.
  • Projectors: Some camcorders offer projectors built into the back of the flip-out LCD viewer. This feature can expand your video footage into a 60-square-inch image and project it onto a nearby surface.
  • Weatherproof: Camcorders may be waterproof, which allows them to withstand damp conditions, rain, or snow, or weatherproof, which may keep the camcorder protected if it is dropped on the ground.

A great starting point for any videographer is to determine what they need most out of their camera. Whether it’s easy connectivity to the Internet, the ability to zoom (as might be needed if you’ll be filming sporting events or theater productions), or simply a great value, knowing your preferences will go a long way toward helping you make the best buying decision.
